Tell us who sleeps in the bed, how tall the tallest person is and how much room you like. We recommend a UK size, compare every size for you, and tell you how big a room you need.
| Size | Mattress (cm) | Width per adult if two share | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 90 × 190 | n/a | One person, children, guest rooms |
| Small double | 120 × 190 | 60 cm | One adult who likes room to spread |
| Double | 135 × 190 | 67 cm | Couples in a smaller room, or one adult with plenty of space |
| King | 150 × 200 | 75 cm | Most couples, and taller sleepers |
| Super king | 180 × 200 | 90 cm | Couples who want space, in a larger room |
Two rules of thumb do most of the work. For length, the bed should be at least 10 to 15 cm longer than the tallest sleeper, so you are not pressed against the headboard or hanging off the end. For width, each adult is comfortable with roughly 75 cm of their own, a little less if they like to sleep close, and more if they sprawl or share with a restless sleeper.
The tool applies those to what you enter, and shows every size so you can see what you would gain or give up by going up or down. It also estimates how much floor space the bed needs with a frame and headboard, and what room that suggests, so you do not choose a size your bedroom cannot take.

A single is 90 × 190 cm, a small double 120 × 190 cm, a double 135 × 190 cm, a king 150 × 200 cm and a super king 180 × 200 cm. An emperor, at around 200 × 200 cm, is also made but is less common. Mattresses can differ by a centimetre or two between makers.
It is the smallest size most couples manage, at about 67 cm each, which is less than a single bed. Many people find it fine for a short time or when space is tight, and cramped for anything longer. A king, at 75 cm each, is the first size that feels comfortable to most couples.
A common rule of thumb is at least 10 to 15 cm longer than the tallest sleeper, so your feet and your head are not at the ends. For someone 185 cm tall that means 195 to 200 cm, which is why a king, at 200 cm long, suits tall people better than a double.
A super king is 30 cm wider than a king, which gives each adult about 90 cm. It is the same length. It also needs a wider bedroom, a wider frame and larger bedding, so check your room first.
A single is the usual choice, and it lasts well into the teenage years. A small double is a good upgrade for a growing teenager if the room is large enough.
About 60 cm at the foot and each side is a comfortable minimum, with more where drawers, wardrobe doors or an ottoman lid have to open. Our bed room fit checker does the sums for you.
