A leather sofa is an investment. It’s not something you buy on a whim or because it looks good in a photo. Done right, it can last over a decade and still look better with age. Done wrong, and you’ll be left with peeling patches, sagging cushions, and a regret you sit on every night.
At Alec’s, we’ve helped thousands of customers find the right leather sofa and just as importantly, avoid the wrong ones. Here’s what you need to know before you hand over your cash.
Not All Leather Is Equal

If the tag just says “leather” and nothing else, ask more questions. There are different types, and they make a big difference.
Full-grain leather is the top of the range. It’s thick, strong and develops character over time. Semi-aniline is softer and more uniform, great for comfort and colour consistency. Bonded leather or faux leather might look smart at first but often start to crack and peel within a couple of years.
We only stock real leather sofas. No bonded blends. No plastic pretending to be premium.
Comfort Comes First

Some people think leather sofas are stiff and cold. That might have been true twenty years ago, but not now. Modern leather furniture is all about support and softness. The trick is finding the right seat depth and cushion type.
Prefer to sit upright with good back support? Go for a firmer, high-backed style. Want to sprawl out on a Sunday? Choose deeper seats with a softer fill. We always say try before you buy and that’s not just sales talk. You’ve got to sit on it to know it’s right.
Colour and Style Matter More Than You Think

Most of our customers walk in thinking they want black or brown. Nothing wrong with that, they’re timeless for a reason. But don’t rule out softer tones like cream, tan or grey. These can make a room feel brighter and more open without losing that luxury feel.
We also stock a mix of styles: classic Chesterfields, sleek recliners, compact two seaters and full corner sets. Think about how the sofa will work with the rest of your space. A big recliner might feel great in the shop but overpower a smaller living room. A light leather suite might brighten up a darker corner.
Maintenance Is Easier Than You Think

People often ask if leather is hard to look after. The truth is, it’s one of the easiest materials going. No fluff, no fading, no saggy arms after a few months.
Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Keep it away from direct radiators or strong sunlight. Use a proper leather conditioner every now and then. That’s it. Treated right, a leather sofa will still be going strong long after a fabric one has had its day.
