Buying a used sofa online has gone weird. Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree — they're full of bargains and also full of unknowns. Who slept on it? Was the house clean? Is the fire-safety label still attached? Will you have to fit it in a hatchback on a Tuesday evening?
We sell second hand sofas a different way. Every used sofa that comes through our doors is professionally cleaned and sanitised in-house, inspected for structural soundness, and checked for the UK fire-safety label that's a legal requirement on every domestic sofa sold in this country. If the label's gone, the sofa doesn't go on the floor. Simple as that.
What you see is what we have. What you pay is what's on the ticket. We deliver to your door, into the room you want it, and we'll take your old sofa away too. Bolton-based, family run since 1983, four decades of doing this the right way.
Nothing complicated. Just the things any honest seller should do, and most online sellers don't.
A live snapshot of recent stock through the warehouse. Used, pre-loved, ex-display and clearance sofas all in one place. Anything you see here can be in your living room this week.
No fake "was £999, now £299" tickets. These are the genuine price bands you'll find on the warehouse floor today. Prices vary by size, brand, condition and material.
Used 2 & 3 Seaters
£100 to £250
Solid pre-loved fabric and leather sofas. Cleaned, inspected, fire-safety verified. Perfect for landlords, students, first homes.
Used Full Suites
£200 to £400
Matching 3+2 or 3-piece suites. The kind of set that costs £1,500+ new from the chains. Same quality, fraction of the price.
Premium Used & Refurbished
£300 upwards
Leather corners, recliners, designer brands. Lightly used, professionally refurbished, ready to last another decade.
All prices include the fire-safety verification, the clean, and the inspection. Delivery is £45 anywhere in the North West. Old sofa removal £45 (or part-exchange against your purchase).
Got a sofa you don't need any more? If it's in reasonable condition with the fire-safety label still attached, we'll value it as part-exchange against any used or refurbished sofa you buy from us. Depending on condition, brand and style, that can be anywhere from £50 to a couple of hundred pounds off your new one.
It's the simplest way to refresh your living room without dumping a perfectly serviceable sofa at the tip. Good for your wallet, good for the planet, good for the next person who buys it from us.
A few phone photos of your current sofa, including the fire-safety label.
We confirm what we can offer against your purchase, no obligation.

Our delivery team brings the new one in, takes the old one with them.
Pre-loved isn't just a budget option. Across our customer base, four groups account for most of our used sofa sales.
Quality sofas at rental-friendly prices, fire-safety verified, ready for the next tenancy. Volume deals available.
Furnish a new place properly without putting a sofa on a credit card. Same quality, fraction of the cost.
Solid, comfy used sofas that survive a few years of student life, at prices that make sense for a shared house.
Buy something that already exists rather than commissioning new from a factory. Less waste, less freight, less landfill.
Honest comparison. Marketplace and Gumtree can be cheaper. They can also go very wrong. Here's the real difference.
Marketplace is genuinely good for some things. A £30 IKEA bookcase, a child's bike. A £200 sofa that you've never sat on, from a stranger, with no fire label, that you have to collect in a van you don't own? That's where we earn the slight premium.
Our used and pre-loved stock includes every style and size. Browse by category, or just walk in and have a look around.

The questions people ask before buying a used sofa, answered straight.
It depends entirely on where you buy it. A used sofa from a reputable retailer who cleans, inspects and verifies the fire-safety label is genuinely fine. A used sofa from an anonymous listing with no fire label, no inspection, and unknown household history carries real risks: bedbugs, fleas, structural failure, and crucially, non-compliance with UK fire-safety law (which makes the sofa illegal to sell). Every used sofa we sell is professionally cleaned, structurally inspected, and verified for the permanent UK fire-safety label. That's the difference.
At Alec's, used 2 and 3 seater sofas start from £100. Full pre-loved suites (3-piece or 3+2) start from around £200 and go up to around £400 depending on size, condition and brand. Premium used leather corners and refurbished designer pieces typically sit at £300 upwards. All prices include the inspection, the deep clean, and the fire-safety verification. Delivery is £45 anywhere in the North West.
Yes. Every used sofa is professionally deep cleaned and sanitised in-house before going on the warehouse floor. Upholstery is cleaned with appropriate products for the material (different process for fabric vs leather), cushions are deodorised, and the frame is checked for soundness. Any sofa that doesn't pass cleaning or inspection doesn't get sold. Simple as that.
Yes, every single one. UK domestic sofas must carry a permanent fire-safety label as required by the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988. If the label is missing or damaged, the sofa is legally not allowed to be resold for domestic use. We check every sofa for an intact, legible label before it goes on the floor. If you want to see the label on any sofa before buying, just ask.
Yes, on most purchases. Send us a few phone photos of your current sofa, including the fire-safety label, and we'll give you a valuation against any sofa you're buying from us. Depending on condition, brand and style, part-exchange values usually fall between £50 and a couple of hundred pounds. We deliver your new sofa and take the old one away on the same visit, no separate disposal trip needed.
A mix of sources: customer part-exchanges, ex-display models from our own warehouse, cancelled orders, and lightly used sofas from house clearances and downsizing. Where we know the origin (smoke-free home, pet-free home, recent purchase that didn't fit), we label it clearly. Where we don't know, we say so. We don't fabricate provenance.
Yes, regularly. Leather is one of the strongest second-hand categories because the material holds up well over time and a leather sofa from a good manufacturer can easily last 15-20 years with proper care. We treat every used leather sofa with appropriate leather conditioner and check the seating panels for cracks or wear before selling. Prices typically start around £150 for two-seaters and £300+ for corners.
Yes, and we often work with landlords furnishing multiple properties. We can put together matching or coordinated sets across multiple properties, all fire-safety verified, all delivered to your portfolio addresses across the North West. Ring us to discuss volume pricing if you're furnishing more than two properties at once.
Yes, on most stock items if booked early. Same-day delivery is available across Greater Manchester and most of Lancashire when ordered before midday. Further afield (Liverpool, Leeds, the Yorkshire side) is usually next-day or a nominated date that works for you. Our own delivery team handles every drop, no third-party couriers.
Used and clearance sofas are sold as-seen, which is why we encourage you to visit the warehouse and sit on the sofa before buying rather than ordering blind. That said, if a sofa develops a fault unrelated to ordinary wear within a reasonable time, we'll work with you to put it right. Forty years in business means we know that doing right by customers matters more than chasing a single sale.
Generally, yes. The environmental cost of a new sofa is largely in the manufacture (frame timber, foam, fabric production, leather tanning) and the freight to get it to you. A used sofa already exists, so buying it means one less new sofa needs to be made and one less serviceable sofa goes to landfill. The clean and refurbishment we do uses a fraction of the resources of new manufacture. If sustainability matters to you, second-hand is one of the easiest household swaps.
We update our Fresh Stock gallery regularly with photos of what's just arrived at the warehouse. Used, pre-loved, ex-display and clearance are all included. That said, stock moves fast and the gallery is a snapshot rather than a live inventory. The fastest way to see what's in is to ring us or visit the warehouse.
